Branded & Non-Fiction Podcast Work

In audio, my most well-known work is in the fiction podcast space. But I cut my teeth in branded and non-fiction work. As a writer and producer, I bring a technical understanding of the form with a writer’s eye for crafting story. In this section, you’ll find a Spotify playlist of some of my best work, along with a little information about some of the shows I have worked on. A full CV is available upon request.

VALOR

VALOR is one of the most unique projects I’ve ever been a part of. Each episode profiles a different female veteran from a different branch of the US armed forces. All five women we spoke with were trailblazers in their own way — from one of the Navy’s first female fighter pilots to some of the first women serving in combat in Iraq. I conducted all five interviews myself, and speaking with our subjects was the most personally gratifying experience of our career. In addition to conducting the interviews, I wrote three episodes, story-edited our other two, and directed our voiceover sessions with the show’s narrator, Deshauna Barber, an Army veteran, former Miss USA, and veterans advocate. This episode tells the powerful story of Army veteran Vanessa Schieber, who received two Purple Hearts and numerous other medals in the line of duty and shared her struggles with PTSD. The series was sponsored by e.l.f. Cosmetics, and I think it shows the value of thinking outside the box when it comes to branded content.

DATA RADICALS

I came onboard DATA RADICALS as a writer and producer for the show’s first season specifically to write for Satyen Sangani, CEO of Alation and the host of the show. Working with Satyen, the Alation content marketing team, and my producer Mackey Wilson, I wrote opening and closing monologues, host narration, edited the episodes, and produced Satyen’s monologue recording sessions when my schedule allowed. Alation is a pioneer in the enterprise data market space, and there wasn’t a lot of hand-holding on this show. These were dense, technical topics, and even though these monologues were only a few minutes long, it’s some of the most challenging work I’ve ever done. And it’s some of the most fun, too. We had a great guest lineup, and this episode with Seth Stephens-Davidowitz is one of my favorite interview I’ve ever heard.

PUNK ROCK HR

When I took over producing HR thought leader Laurie Reuttimann’s PUNK ROCK HR, the show was already established and successful. It was my role to create new workflows, level up our production, and make sure Laurie had the best-sounding show possible — because we had a very important mission: support the launch of Laurie’s book, BETTING ON YOU: HOW TO PUT YOURSELF FIRST AND (FINALLY) TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR CAREER.

JOY@WORK FROM KEARNEY

JOY@WORK was a signature initiative of consulting firm Kearney, hosted by its Chairman Alex Liu. The show sought to highlight the “joy gap” between our work and what we expect of it. I edited these episodes, wrote host narration for our best-of episodes, and also wrote show notes for the episodes I worked on.

MARGINS FROM MANAGING EDITOR

MARGINS FROM MANAGING EDITOR is the brand podcast for MANAGING EDITOR, a content marketing magazine run by B2B marketing agency Rep Cap. I came onboard during the first season to write and produce the show. MARGINS is a heavily scripted show with a unique format: there are three interviews, with host narration interspersed throughout. Though we planned our episode topics in advance, both hosts had quite a bit of leeway to follow the conversations wherever they felt it should go, and it was my responsibility to create something cohesive from three very interesting — but often very divergent — conversations.

INSIDE THE MIND

INSIDE THE MIND is Kearney’s consumer podcast. For this show, I produced and helped create a template. From here, I passed responsibilities on to a junior producer. The show combines Kearney’s proprietary research into consumer behavior with interviews with specific consumer sectors themselves. For this show, I had unique responsibilities as I helped an agency scale. I created all workflows for the show, produced our interviews with our consumers (all conducted in-house), and then edited the show and all host narration. In other words, I was responsible for creating the show’s voice. After production of the finished pilot, a junior producer took over duties for the show. The show’s been running for four seasons, so I guess I did something right.
